The Cello
A stunning cello crafted by this renowned maker team in 1993, inspired by the Guarnerius Filius Andrea model with touches influenced by Joseph Guarneri del Gesù. It features a striking one-piece back of Balsam Poplar, paired with a Beechwood scroll grafted to a maple neck. The golden-red varnish beautifully highlights the natural character of the wood and adds warmth to its appearance. Tonally, the cello is warm, resonant, and full of color, offering depth, clarity, and a richly expressive and responsive voice suitable for a wide range of playing styles.
The Makers
Joseph Grubaugh and Sigrun Seifert have worked together as violin makers for more than 38 years, establishing their Petaluma, California workshop in 1980. Sigrun trained at the Mittenwald School of Violin Making, while Joseph studied music before apprenticing in the craft. They met at the Weisshaar shop in 1977, forming a partnership grounded in shared skill and trust. Renowned for both making and restoration, they are VSA Hors Concours honorees with multiple Gold and Silver medals, and their instruments are played by leading musicians worldwide.
