The Violin Bow

This remarkable bow features a stick crafted by Joseph Henry in Paris around 1845, clearly branded with “VUILLAUME A PARIS” and “BREVET D’INVENTION.” Originally designed as a self-rehairing bow, it was expertly converted by Paul Siefried, who also created the ebony and silver frog and button now mounted, faithfully reflecting Henry’s original style.

The bow is exceptionally well balanced and plays with remarkable ease and responsiveness, offering both the charm of historic craftsmanship and the reliability demanded by today’s musicians.

The Maker

Joseph Henry was a renowned 19th-century French violin bow maker, celebrated for his exceptional craftsmanship and contribution to the Peccatte school. Trained under Dominique Peccatte and later partnering with Pierre Simon in Paris, Henry crafted violin bows prized for their superb balance, responsiveness, and rich tonal warmth. His bows are highly sought after by professional violinists, soloists, and collectors worldwide. Considered among the finest bow makers of his era, Joseph Henry’s work stands alongside legends like François Tourte, making his bows a valuable addition to any musician’s collection.
