The Bow
Hippolyte Camille Lamy made this fine violin bow circa 1900. It weighs 58.0 grams and represents an excellent period in Lamy’s career. The bow is graceful in form and reminiscent of his father’s work, reflecting the close working relationship between the two makers. Paul Childs has certified the bow, adding further confidence to its attribution.
The Maker
Hippolyte Camille Lamy was born on August 13, 1875, the son of the celebrated bow maker Alfred Lamy. He trained and worked alongside his father, and in the earliest years of his career their work was often difficult to distinguish. Gradually, between 1905 and 1910, Hippolyte began developing his own distinct style, stepping further out from his father’s shadow.
Like many Frenchmen of his generation, his life and career were interrupted by the first World War. Afterward, he returned to bow making and took over his father’s workshop following Alfred’s death. He continued working well into old age, ultimately passing away on January 14, 1942.
Today, Lamy’s bows are prized for their graceful lines and refined craftsmanship, carrying forward one of the most respected names in French bow making history.
