The Bow
Louis Thomassin made this violin bow, though it is branded “Leon Bernardel.” It offers a light yet surprisingly sturdy feel that yields a brilliant tone with ease. The bow weighs 57.5 grams.
The Maker
Louis Thomassin learned his craft in Mirecourt, where he worked for the Bazin family. In 1872, he moved to Paris to work for François Nicolas Voirin, later carrying on Voirin’s shop after his death. Thomassin established his own workshop in Paris in 1891.
Thomassin’s bows are known for their beautiful and precise quality, and this particular example reflects that reputation clearly. His work remains valued today among collectors and performing musicians for its combination of lightness, strength, and tonal brilliance.
