The Violin Bow
A fine violin bow by Marie Louis Piernot of Paris, preserved in excellent condition. The dark red-brown pernambuco stick is fitted with an ebony and ivory faceplate. The ebony frog is mounted in nickel and set with large pearl eyes, while the ebony adjuster features two nickel rings and a pearl end dot. Silver tinsel winding and a leather thumb grip complete the bow.
On the lighter side, the bow feels comfortable and maneuverable in the hand. It plays nicely, with an easy response and a lively, agile character.
The Maker
Marie Louis Piernot (1880–1959) was born in Neufchâteau, France, and began his training in 1892 in the Mirecourt workshop of Charles Nicolas Bazin, remaining there until 1900. He then moved to Paris and worked for Joseph Arthur Vigneron before joining the shop of Léon Bernardel, where he remained until 1923. That year, Piernot established his own workshop in Paris. He also produced bows for a number of prominent violin shops and dealers, many of which were sold under the retailer’s own brand rather than his.
