The Cello
This cello is a beautiful representation of the Eastern European school of making, with distinctive craftsmanship and thoughtfully chosen materials throughout. The two-piece maple back displays strong, irregular flame, echoed in the ribs and scroll, while the two-piece spruce top shows straight, medium-width grain. Subtle carving details in the scroll and ff-hole wings reflect regional stylistic traditions. The varnish is an orange-brown color over a yellow ground, giving the instrument a warm, inviting appearance. In excellent condition with no cracks or major repairs, the cello offers an even, clear tone well suited to chamber music and orchestral playing.
The Maker
Matizs Starcenko (1893–1964) was a remarkably cosmopolitan violin maker whose life traced the upheavals of the 20th century. Born in Latvia and raised in Siberia, he fled the Russian Revolution and settled in Harbin, China, where he lived and worked for eighteen years. On the eve of World War II, he relocated to Brazil, continuing his craft before moving to Hollywood, California in 1948, adopting the name Matthew Starr. He later settled in Santa Barbara, producing approximately 75 violins, 35 cellos, and numerous bows.
