The Viola
Made by contemporary Cremonese maker Maurizio Tadioli, this viola is modeled after a Gasparo da Salo instrument dating to around 1580, reflecting the bold character and decorative style associated with the early Brescian school.
The two-piece maple back has medium-wide flames descending toward the center joint, with ribs and scroll of matching maple. The two-piece spruce top displays medium-wide grain. Double purfling borders both the top and back, complemented by decorative purfling inlays in the upper and lower bouts of the back. A warm orange varnish over a golden ground completes the instrument’s striking appearance.
The viola has a wonderful, resonant tone with impressive depth and richness. It speaks easily under the bow and is exceptionally comfortable to play, combining a deep tonal character with an immediate and effortless response.
The Maker
Maurizio Tadioli was born in Cremona in 1967 and was introduced to violin making at an early age by his grandfather, Carlo Pizzamiglio. He later attended the International School of Violin Making in Cremona, graduating with the highest marks in 1985. Tadioli has received numerous awards at Italian and international violin-making competitions and has continued to refine his craft through advanced study, including work on copying and antiquing historic instruments. His instruments reflect both the Cremonese tradition and his interest in other historic Italian schools.
