The Maker
Michael D’Avanzo is an American bow maker and professional cellist who has been a member of the Phoenix Symphony since 1990. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Mannes College and his master’s degree from the Juilliard School. Alongside his performing career, D’Avanzo studied bow making with Michael Vann and Steve Beckley and participated in the Violin Society of America’s Oberlin workshops. His perspective as a longtime orchestral cellist informs his bow making, and his bows are played by professional musicians throughout North America.
