The Cello

This visually striking cello, made in or near Naples between the 1850s and 1880s, has been attributed to Ventapane and Gabrielli. It features a beautifully figured maple back and sides, highlighted by uncommon black-wood outside linings that give the cello a unique appearance. Petite in size, the cello has a bright, intimate voice with excellent responsiveness and clarity. It speaks easily and would be well suited to chamber music and orchestral settings. Dendrochronology by Peter Ratcliff further supports the cello’s origin. This cello presents an opportunity to acquire an old Italian instrument at a reduced price due to the uncertainty surrounding its precise maker.
