The Violin Bow

This fine violin bow by Nicolas Simon, known as “Simon FR,” features a round stick of select pernambuco with an ebony and ivory faceplate. The ebony frog is nickel mounted with pearl eyes, while the ebony adjuster has two nickel bands and a pearl end dot. A sterling silver winding and leather thumb grip complete the bow. The frog has been expertly restored, with a condition report completed, and the stick remains in very good condition.

Although lighter in weight, the bow draws a beautifully rich and substantial tone. It is exceptionally responsive and articulate, offering excellent clarity, control, and agility throughout the range.

The Maker

Nicolas Simon, commonly known by his brand “SIMON FR,” was born in Mirecourt, France, in 1806 and became one of the notable French bow makers of the Peccatte school. He established his own business around 1840 and developed a distinctive style characterized by strong heads, powerful sticks, and excellent playing qualities. The “FR” in his brand is generally believed to refer to the maiden name of his wife, Frébinet, who was closely involved with the workshop.
