The Violin
This beautiful violin was made by the celebrated Neapolitan maker Nicolaus Gagliano in 1765. It has a back length of 35.3 cm and displays bold, well proportioned archings typical of Gagliano’s finest work. This particular example is notably broad, with flatter archings that give the instrument a bright, penetrating tone. The violin was previously owned by a prominent violinist and comes with certification from Johann Stubiger of Vienna, dated 1935, as well as from Kenneth Warren and Sons.
The Maker
Nicolaus Gagliano worked in Naples from around 1730 until his death in 1787. He was the son of Alessandro Gagliano, the founder of the celebrated Neapolitan Gagliano dynasty of violin makers. Nicolaus proved more prolific than his brother Gennaro, and his instruments often show a distinction and refinement that set them apart within the family’s output.
Gagliano instruments are highly regarded today for their craftsmanship and tonal qualities, and Nicolaus in particular is considered one of the finest makers to emerge from the Naples school. His violins continue to be sought after by collectors and performing musicians alike for their combination of visual elegance and powerful, penetrating sound.
