The Violin
This violin is a fine and characteristic example of Nicolaus Gagliano’s work, dated 1765. It has a back length of 35.0 cm and reflects the craftsmanship typical of Gagliano’s output during this period of his career.
The Maker
Nicolaus Gagliano worked in Naples from around 1730 until his death in 1787. He was the son of Alessandro Gagliano, founder of the celebrated Neapolitan Gagliano dynasty of violin makers. Nicolaus proved more prolific than his brother Gennaro, and his instruments often show a distinction and refinement that set them apart within the family’s output.
Gagliano instruments remain highly regarded today for their craftsmanship and tonal qualities. As a result, Nicolaus in particular is considered one of the finest makers to emerge from the Naples school. Collectors and performing musicians alike continue to seek out his violins for their combination of visual elegance and rich, resonant sound.
