The Viola
This Oreste Martini viola from 1949 comes from a rare corner of his output. Martini made over 300 violins but only 10 violas. So a viola by his hand is an uncommon find.
The body measures 16 inches, or 40.7 cm. The string length runs 14 3/8 inches, or 36.5 cm. That is a wonderful size. It pairs the sound of a large instrument with the ease of a smaller body. So players with smaller hands can still enjoy a big voice.
The sound is rich and responsive. In addition, the viola has a clear, projecting tone. Therefore, it can hold its own in a section or as a solo voice. Meanwhile, its responsive feel rewards a light touch from the bow.
Martini followed classical Italian models. He finished his instruments in red or orange-brown varnish. Similarly, this 1949 Oreste Martini viola reflects that classical approach.
For a player who wants Italian heritage in a manageable size, a 1949 viola by Oreste Martini makes strong sense. Today, it has found a new home.
The Maker
Oreste Martini lived from 1893 to 1957 and died in Mantua, Italy. He trained as a pupil of Scarampella. Later, he exhibited at Cremona in 1937.
His work earned medals at Cremona, Padua and Paris. Each of those awards marks recognition from his peers. Also, his output was large. It included over 300 violins, 10 violas, 50 cellos and 45 arched-back double basses.
As a result, violas make up a tiny share of his work. That rarity gives this Oreste Martini viola from 1949 special interest.
Certification
Horacio Piñero certified this viola. A certificate from a known expert supports its attribution.
