The Cello

Made by Otto Karl Schenk as a bench copy of Ray Kelley’s 1694 Grancino, this petite cello captures the character, proportions, and playability of the original.

The one-piece, slab-cut poplar back is complemented by quarter-cut poplar ribs. The maple scroll reproduces the Grancino’s distinctive plain, flat heel. Its two-piece spruce top displays medium-width grain that broadens toward the flanks, with attractive hazel-spruce markings throughout. A warm orange-brown varnish over a golden ground completes the instrument’s appearance.

The cello produces an impressive sound for its compact size. Its voice retains much of the warmth and resonance of the Grancino while offering a brighter, more direct tonal character with excellent response and projection.

The Bench Copy of Ray Kelley’s Grancino

After playing the Grancino, Kelley learned of Schenk’s copy and later traveled to Switzerland to purchase it. The cello became a trusted second instrument during his distinguished orchestral and studio career, offering the familiar proportions and playing characteristics of his treasured Grancino.
