The Cello
A beautiful example by this modern American maker, this 1998 cello is both visually striking and thoughtfully made. The one-piece, slab-cut American maple back is fitted with small wings added by the maker at the lower bouts and shows a strong, irregular horizontal flame. Deep, quarter-cut maple ribs with medium-wide figure are paired with a softly flamed maple scroll. The two-piece spruce top has straight, even grain, widening only slightly toward the flanks. Finished in an orange-brown varnish over a golden ground, the cello is a joy to play, feeling free, open, and powerful across all registers.
The Maker
Peter Staszel was an American violin and cello maker associated with the William Harris Lee & Co. workshop in Chicago, where he worked for over 25 years crafting and restoring stringed instruments. His instruments, including violins, violas, and notably cellos from the 1990s and early 2000s, are sought after for their rich, clear tone and strong projection, often sold through respected shops and dealers. Staszel’s work continues to be played and appreciated by advancing students and professionals alike.
