The Viola Bow
This mid-19th century French viola bow features an octagonal stick of dark brown ironwood and presents with striking visual appeal. The ebony frog is cut with an open trench design and adorned with a decorated pearl shield, complemented by an ivory adjuster and silver-mounted details that give the bow a bold, elegant look.
In playing, the bow feels strong and secure in the hand. It is evenly balanced and tracks the string with ease, offering a stable, predictable response. The tone is focused and clear, making it an excellent choice for violists seeking control, strength, and consistency across the instrument.
The Maker
Joseph Gaude (1818–1881) was a French bow maker from Mirecourt, a center of 19th-century bow making. He trained within the local tradition, initially influenced by the Adam school, and later worked in a style shaped by Étienne Pajeot, possibly during time spent in his workshop. Active as a bow maker from around 1839 to 1854, he later continued as a luthier. His bows are relatively rare and reflect the transitional development of the French bow in the mid-19th century.
