The Cello
Built for a player who values clarity and projection, this cello by Virgilio Capellini has a two-piece maple back with deep, narrow flames descending from the center joint. Matching ribs and scroll complete the instrument. The two-piece spruce top displays a consistent medium-width grain. A warm brown-orange varnish rests over a luminous golden ground. A pernambuco tailpiece by Bois d’Harmonie adds a refined finishing touch. Tonally, the cello is exceptionally powerful. It offers a bright, focused voice, quick response, and excellent carrying power. Its direct, commanding character would suit a soloist especially well.

The Maker
Virgilio Capellini was born in Cremona in 1928. He studied at the city’s International School of Violin Making under Peter Tatar, graduating in 1947. He initially worked in his family’s woodworking business, then returned to violin making as demand for fine instruments increased. Capellini later established his own workshop in Cremona, where he worked alongside Alfredo Primavera. Collectors know his instruments for their precise craftsmanship, traditional Stradivari and Guarneri-inspired models, carefully selected woods, and warm red-brown varnishes.
