The Viola

Made in Minneapolis in 2008, this William Bartruff viola is modeled after the work of Paolo Maggini of Brescia. The one-piece, slab-cut maple back displays soft, broad flame running predominantly across its width, complemented by ribs of plainer maple. The quarter-cut maple scroll shows stronger flame and has been grafted. The two-piece top is fashioned from spruce with straight, even grain throughout. A warm orange-brown varnish over a golden ground is lightly antiqued, giving the viola an attractive, mature appearance that suits its Brescian-inspired model. The viola remains in excellent condition.

The Maker

William Bartruff is an American violin maker based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he has made violins, violas, and cellos since 1972. His interest in historic Italian instruments began at an early age, and his work has focused extensively on models derived from the great Italian makers, particularly the Brescian tradition. Bartruff has become especially known for his violas, with his instruments used by professional orchestral musicians. In 2011, he founded the Violin Guild of America, where he has trained and mentored a new generation of instrument makers.
