The Cello
This exceptional cello by William Forster III closely follows a Stradivari model of the 1680–1690 period. By the beginning of the 19th century, London makers faced increasing demand for instruments modeled after the great classical Italian masters, and the Forster family responded by adopting forms and proportions more closely associated with Stradivari. This cello is a fine example of that development, combining the Forster workshop’s distinctive English craftsmanship with an elegant Cremonese-inspired model. Constructed from beautifully figured quarter-cut maple and select spruce, the instrument displays refined workmanship throughout. In playing, the cello offers impressive projection with a rich, warm tonal character, excellent depth, and a commanding presence across the registers.
The Maker
William Forster III (1764–1824), often known as “Young Forster,” was an important English violin maker and a member of the celebrated Forster family of London. He trained under his father, William Forster II, known as “Old Forster,” and eventually joined him in the family workshop. Although he produced violins and violas, Forster III is particularly well known for his cellos, which are admired for their fine workmanship and tonal qualities. His best cellos remain highly desirable among professional musicians and collectors of fine English instruments.
