The Violin

William Whedbee made this violin in 2003, and it stands as a beautiful example of his skilled craftsmanship. It has a back length of 35.6 cm and remains in excellent condition. An elegant golden brown varnish gives the instrument striking visual character, while its splendid playability makes it an especially attractive choice for a performing musician.

The Maker

William Whedbee was born in Hawaii in 1952 and went on to craft over seven hundred instruments throughout his career. His interest in both music and wood sculpture first developed while he attended the University of Chicago. Inspired to pursue this passion further, he traveled to Cremona, Italy in 1976 to train at the Institute of Violin Making, immersing himself in the classical Italian tradition of instrument construction.

In 1979, Whedbee returned to Chicago at the invitation of William Harris Lee. Shortly afterward, he established his own private workshop, where he continued building instruments known for their fine craftsmanship and rich tonal qualities. Today, Whedbee’s violins are valued by musicians and collectors alike for combining classical training with a distinctly personal artistic touch.
